Kurt “Nirvana” Cobain

Kurt Cobain and his epoch making band, Nirvana were the music definers of the Nineteen Nineties. They made grunge cool. Additionally they designed a lot of money and die hard fans. “Smells like Teen Spirit” became an anthem all across the world. The quality of grunge was unparalleled and also the record executives could not get enough of Kurt. The amount of work that Nirvana put out wasn’t as significant his or her predecessors; this is exactly what endeared them most to marketers. The band was still being fresh and great success was to come their way. Then Kurt died. He committed suicide in the age of 27 by shooting himself having a shotgun. Kurt was dead, this guitar rock band imploded and the dream wasn’t any more.

Kurt was born about the 20th of February 1967 in Hoquaim, the suburbs 140 kilometers south-west of Seattle. His mother would be a cocktail waitress and his father was an auto mechanic. His parents divorced when he was seven. This had a lasting impact on him and was the source of a number of Nirvana’s best music. It was during this time period that he met future Nirvana bassist Kris Novoselic. Each of them became great fans from the British punk-rock groups – Sex Pistols and Joy Division. Kurt formed a number of bands within the mid-eighties before finally settling down with Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl as Nirvana. In 1989, after playing a lot of shows and coming out with a number of demo tapes they recorded their first album Bleach for a local Seattle independent label called Sub-Pop. The promise within the band was unmistakable plus they were rewarded when Geffen bought out their contract.

Bleach got them lots of recognition in the uk but it was the next album Nevermind that catapulted them to the world stage. It included a number of different, crunching and screaming songs. Nevermind continued to sell ten million copies and made $550 million leaving Nirvana overnight millionaires. The 24 years old Kurt Cobain was overwhelmed and considered heroin to handle the constant attention and pressure. It seemed that he found it difficult to deal with the truth that lyrics that meant so much to him were contorted by the fans since it suited them. One of the songs on Nevermind called Polly was an anti-rape song. It was sung by a couple of his fans because they repeatedly raped a young girl.

In February 1992 Cobain married the already pregnant Courtney Love. Later in the year Nirvana released Incesticide, that was then the birth of his daughter Frances Bean Cobain. At the begining of 1993 In Utero was launched and headed right to the top the charts. In Utero would be a much more open than Nirvana’s previous albums and contained songs which were especially near to Kobain’s heart. Aside from music, Kurt loved guns coupled with several with him. The continual touring and heroin combined resulted in him consuming close to fifty prescription painkillers with champagne. He was rushed to hospital in a coma.

About the 5th of April, 1994 Kurt’s body is discovered sprawled in his house in Seattle by an electrical contractor. He had committed suicide by shooting himself together with his favorite shotgun. There is a note that was addressed to his wife and daughter. In his suicide note, he alluded to 2 stuff that had brought him to suicide – the stomach pain which had haunted him for years together, and his agony over his music, about that they wrote, “don’t have the passion anymore.” The note ended using the words “I adore you, I really like you.” Two days after Kurt Cobain’s body was found, near to 5,000 people gathered in Seattle for a candlelight vigil. The distraught crowd filled the environment with profane chants, burnt their flannel shirts and fought with police.

Even in death he was worth lots of money. Cobain merchandise hit the stands in no time. The media created various angles to his death and life. One senior music executive put it best when he explained, “The only thing that wasn’t done for Kurt was putting him inside a straitjacket and locking him in a room. But I’m sure that there are plenty of people who are thinking now – Why didn’t I do that?”

Gothic Lifestyle

The term Gothic originates from Germanic tribes which ruled over Europe throughout the Dark ages. Gothicism was popularized through literature and it became a distinguished culture in the mid 1800s. Goths will always be considered as odd and attention seeking individuals by people who consider themselves to become normal. Goths are people who regard themselves as misfits in the mundane everyday life of mainstream culture. So, they have made a lifestyle for themselves, which gives them the liberty of portraying their distinctiveness and individuality. Though Gothic lifestyle still faces numerous criticisms, it’s evolved as a rich sub-culture which connects every goth to the other.

Gothic lifestyle is a approach to life, in which the Goths follow their own group of values and attitudes. They have a distinct culture, which includes architecture, literature, dressing style, appearance, art and music. The fact that is most popular about Gothic lifestyle is the sense of dressing. Black is the color that is linked to the Goths. However, other dark colors like blood red, purple, green and blue will also be well-liked by the Gothic people. Even the look of them is distinguished having a pale base and dark make up. They like their head of hair to be straight and pitch black. However, merely dressing up just like a Goth cannot make a person one. As being a Goth is more concerning the attitude that the person has. Gothic people choose this lifestyle simply because they feel detached in the mainstream culture and lifestyle. Gothic lifestyle provides them a feeling of independence, where they can, not just express their emotions and feelings, but additionally exist in a manner that is unacceptable in the conventional society.

Death is another important element that is connected with Goths. People within the conventional society live in the fear of death. However, Gothic people follow an attitude that is totally different from that. They revel in the concept of death and take it like a natural extension of life. Goths are known to come with an attraction towards darkness and depression. Their detached and depressed faces really are a reflection of the darkness and sadness that encompasses the presence of all human beings. Goths in a gloomy way benefit from the darkness that life offers.

The attitude and elegance from the Goths are reflected within their architecture, arts, music and literature. Goth music continues to be influenced by several eras and may be split into four main sections, including Medieval, 80s – Dark Wave, Dark Techno/Industrial/EBM and Dark Metal.

Gothic literature developed throughout the Romantic age, using the writings of writers like Byron, Shelley, etc. Along with the works of those writers, Goths are interested in reading works of Dante, Tolstoy and also historical books, Greek mythology and also the Bible.

Gothic lifestyle is an alternative way of living life, which consists of individuals who share the same thoughts and views. Goths do not chose this lifestyle because it makes them cool and different, but because they feel comfortable within the Gothic world. In short, Goths are no different from human kind, only their perspective is.
